The time I took myself on a date

In the past few years, I've taken a few solo trips to attend events, and it surprised me how much I love to travel alone.

It's a little scary and outside my comfort zone, but there's something about time by yourself that elicits new thoughts and ideas and different observations of the world around you.

I'd love to share a little story about a solo trip I once took …

A few years ago, I was in Scottsdale for an event, and I decided I wanted to go out to dinner by myself. I picked a Mexican restaurant that came highly recommended. When I went to make a reservation for “1”, I was unable to. So, I just made a reservation for “2”.

When I arrived at the restaurant, I told them my “friend” was unable to join, and it would just be me. They seemed annoyed and offered me a seat at the very crowded bar. I declined.

Then they tried to seat me by myself on the very hot patio that nobody else was sitting at. I declined that too.

I told the host that I'd like the table I reserved.

Reluctantly, the host walked me back to a little two-top table towards the back of the restaurant.

I put my phone in my purse, and I enjoyed a cocktail and some delicious tacos (my favorite). The only awkward part was that I felt like the people near me probably thought I was staring at them because I had nowhere else to look!

It surprised me how unaccommodating they were towards a solo diner, but I succeeded in taking myself on a solo date and had a great time.

I was proud of myself.

I've never taken a solo trip without an event to attend, so that is something I'd like to do in the coming year. I recently came across this Good Housekeeping article on The 35 Best Solo Travel Destinations in the United States, and I thought it was worth sharing in case you are interested in taking a solo trip, too.

It's also a reminder that there are so many great cities in the U.S. to visit! Sedona, AZ, has been at the top of my list for a while, so maybe that'll be my next solo trip.

Taking the step to do things by yourself can take courage, but you'll be amazed at what you find when you open yourself up to new people and experiences.
